scav I rewrote some code from Rust go Go last night, and I really get the appeal from a "i spun this up in less than 30 min without any prior knowledge". Apparently, mutability and concurrency is hard and its weird that a language so obsessed with it is not immutable :D [03:13]

fovid-19 Probably. [09:08]
freeone3000 Man, quebec is now allowing for security deposits. This sucks. [09:12]
db what does that even mean? [09:13]
freeone3000 So in order to rent an apartment, if you've previously been evicted, you might have to put down up to 20% of your first months rent, to be held in trust until you move out. [09:15]
freeone3000 For people who can't find a co-signer to waive this, this'll definitely make it harder to rent. [09:16]
db 20%? where I used to live, two full months of rent were customary [09:17]
db maybe you meant to say 200%? [09:19]
freeone3000 No? 20%. [09:19]
db so you rent an apartment for say 2500, you have to deposit 500? and that's a problem?! [09:20]
db I don't get it [09:20]
Bombe In Germany it?s usually 3 months. [09:20]
freeone3000 It's $500 more than was required a week ago! [09:20]
db yeah right? [09:20]
db well where will you get all the money, freeone3000 [09:21]
freeone3000 CORPIQ is attempting to do an end-run around the regie du logemient by saying it's a 'free association' which is nonsense. [09:21]
Bombe No alternative, sell your body. [09:21]
db Bombe: that's what I was thinking [09:21]
Bombe Right? It?s the only way. [09:22]
freeone3000 "well you don't HAVE to do a security deposit, you could just not rent the property" fuck y'all that's the entire point of tenant protections [09:22]
freeone3000 killer bit is that it's held in trust and they can't reclaim it *ever*, you'll always get all of it back even if you owe back rent and get evicted, so it's just driving up the cost of new leases [09:23]
Bombe That does sound weird. [09:23]
Bombe Here the deposit will be used to cover anything that might have to be done after you moved out (if caused by you). [09:24]
freeone3000 oh. average damage to the property here is expected to be covered in rent. [09:24]
Bombe And you get interest for your deposit. [09:24]
db srsly I got it back in full every single time i Germany, Switzerland and Thailand [09:25]
Bombe Hmm, I once didn?t but that was when I stopped paying rent and simply moved out one night. :) [09:25]
db ok. [09:25]
fovid-19 Lol at 20% security deposit. [09:27]
fovid-19 NYC requires whole month. I had to pay three months. [09:28]
fovid-19 And yes. Expected wear and tear is never a reason to deduct from the deposits. [09:28]

NewToThisV21 I am sorting out this issue with data being inserted into a database. Lead wants business to be able to upload the same file multiple times and update the production DB with this data. I ask if she's ever had business upload the same file before? She says no. I start testing, and it's all over the place with what gets updated. I feel like there should be a better way. Such as building out a front end with validation. [11:57]
db weird. I feel like I just read that somewhere [11:57]
NewToThisV21 Is it a bad idea to have business be able to just randomly upload files and change production db? [11:57]

tang^ freeone3000: so, no fireplaces allowed? [02:36]
freeone3000 tang^, No fireplaces! [02:36]
tang^ wife just moved into a place in Calgary that has a wood fireplace in the kitchen [02:36]
freeone3000 The house I'm in has an electric stand in. It's... a thing, to be sure. [02:36]
puppy_za well, fireplace is more for sentimental values [02:36]
puppy_za obviously you will need stable power supply to afford not having it :p [02:37]

tang^ inlaws ran natural gas into their fireplace [02:38]
freeone3000 puppy_za, Well, in winter, HydroQuebec takes power outages *very seriously* to residences. [02:38]
tang^ I've seen some of the ones they've had to work through [02:39]
freeone3000 All of our heat is electric. Very few buildings even have a gas hookup still. I have one to the building, but it's shut off for safety reasons - nothing in the house uses it. [02:40]
tang^ Québec, Winter, and Ice Storms are all related in my head [02:40]
tang^ Alberta still has plenty of natural gas [02:40]
puppy_za I remember a visit to friends in the country side in winter. I fell asleep on a sofa by the fireplace [02:41]
tang^ nice [02:42]
puppy_za it's a future I admire [02:46]
puppy_za you forgot Hockey :p [02:47]
puppy_za I would add Celine Dion but maybe that's just me [02:47]
puppy_za (to Quebec) [02:48]
tang^ I'm still eyeing up places in the foothills as a retirement spot [02:48]
tang^ disconnect for good [02:48]
puppy_za the civilisation will find you :p [02:48]
tang^ with luck, not until I'm gone [02:49]
puppy_za I mean, we have wifi and 4G in Africa [02:49]
tang^ oh sure. probably keep a cell phone for emergencies [02:49]
puppy_za I went to a Burning-man style camping thing. There was only cellphone reception once or twice a day, in certain direction. [02:50]
tang^ but you can choose to not use the technology [02:51]
puppy_za true [02:51]
puppy_za being almost forced to abandon it, does put it in perspective. [02:51]
tang^ I think I'd want to position myself so that I have to walk several hours to the nearest town just to get a signal [02:51]
puppy_za how will you cope for medical emergency? :p [02:52]
tang^ dogs and a sled or wagon [02:52]
puppy_za I don't know. Dogs start eating the owner after like 48 hours :p [02:53]
tang^ or maybe a moose [02:53]
tang^ well, if I'm dead, I'd want them well fed [02:53]
tang^ but then it isn't an emergency [02:53]
puppy_za maybe smoke signal will do [02:53]
puppy_za if only people still use it [02:54]
tang^ radio for emergency (I said cell earlier) [02:54]
puppy_za ok that sounds more reasonable [02:54]
puppy_za try to clear out a helipad in your backyard [02:54]
tang^ I'll be in the clearing at these GPS coords [02:55]
tang^ thxkbai [02:55]
tang^ actually, even close to Calgary, camps have signs saying to call $emergnum and give the GPS coords [02:56]
tang^ they'll send a STARS heli [02:56]
puppy_za I assume the medical insurance will pay for it [02:57]
tang^ yeah [02:57]
puppy_za it's pretty pricy in here [02:57]
puppy_za I hope that my medical aid covers it :p [02:57]
freeone3000 lucky. here we get slapped with a $80 charge for using an ambulance. [02:57]
puppy_za that's cheap [02:57]
puppy_za I mean, still a fee but it's cheap [02:58]
freeone3000 well, it's the most expensive part of a hospital stay [02:58]
puppy_za not unreasonable, from my perspective [02:58]
puppy_za I think it's 3x that in South Africa, and that doesn't include any medication and procedure in the ambulance [02:59]
puppy_za I am getting old so I start to look into all the medical expenses [03:00]
freeone3000 ...yeah, that $80 is a flat charge, and covers the transit, all treatment is always covered. [03:01]
puppy_za that's the sign of a developed country [03:02]
tang^ Canada ftw [03:03]
puppy_za ok I gotta go and have some food. Cheers. [03:06]
NewToThisV21 Is it better to have more columns to store your data in one spot, or querying multiple tables? So creating 100 columns versus querying four tables? [03:30]

NewToThisV21 What would make one better than the other? [03:40]
k5_ NewToThisV21: keeping data that belongs together in a table and using separate tables for separate concepts improves readability. Depending on the actual structure of the data it can remove redundancy. [03:51]
k5_ NewToThisV21: it might introduce slightly more complex queries. [03:52]
NewToThisV21 My team is adding more tables to store all relevant data to try and reduce the complexity of queries. Since right now a lot of our select queries are like 3 paragraphs long [03:52]
NewToThisV21 I wish I had a better understanding of DB architecture to know if it is a good/bad idea [03:53]
k5_ The scentific consensus i am aware of is: you try to keep your database normalized and split into separate tables, until you have an actual problem (confirmed by actual measurements) [03:57]
k5_ It highly depends on you database size, your performance requirements, access patterns aso [03:58]
fovid-19 Yeet. My new work computer setup is set up. [04:03]

ricky_clarkson I'm using type annotations in Python for the first time ever, and they're finding fucked up code. [05:06]
ricky_clarkson unrelated, I'm working with a non-engineer who doesn't seem to realise that X happening in production means that X can happen. "that can't happen because of the change we made in Y". I'm finding communicating without being condescending difficult. </vent> [05:18]

Diablo-D3 they push the epic microtransaction payment platform to the mobile versions [07:09]
Diablo-D3 before this, they draft the paperwork for suing, and make the "lets not make 2020 1984" ad [07:10]
Diablo-D3 then apple says TOS violation, banned [07:10]
Diablo-D3 then they filed the suit, published the ad [07:10]
