db a couple months ago our team decided against using @Nullable annotations and annotaiton-based null analysis, because we concluded that it adds a lot of unnecessary null-checks to our code. we had examples where there were 60 null checks in a class (and nested checks like requireNonNull(requireNonNull(foo).getBar()) [12:45]
db can anyone share their strong opinion on this topic? I'm curious [12:45]
db because there is this guy who I think was on vacation or something when we made that decision and he is furious. but he never comes up with any good explanation why those null-checks are needed. [12:46]
db like he claims readability but I think the very opposite is the case. [12:46]
db Of course I understand the idea but I just think it doesn't work out very well in reality. [12:50]
Faux Huh? The purpose of the nonnull annotation is to make it obvious that the null check isn't needed, and to reduce them? Adding Nullable everywhere then being surprised that stuff is nullable seems strange. Which way around is it surprising to you? [12:58]
db maybe it is due to the way the framework is set up. all the entities' properties "have to be" nullable (I didn't really look into this but I think it is so that the beans can be created empty and then have their properties set? well, it leads to *having to* check all properties for null even though them being null is not a thing that happens in reality because e.g. vlidation on the REST-side dto makes sure it isn't null [01:01]
db or it is not nullable in the database etc. [01:02]
db I mean I was wondering all along that maybe we're just doing something hugely wrong there. I havent seen this being used before and here it sure wasn't of any help. [01:02]
db well consider entity.id ... it sure is nullable. but I know that it is never nullable after I saved an object to the database. I don't want to check it. if it is null then something went wrong and I'm totally fine with getting an NPE. no? [01:10]
db *never null [01:17]
db I mean, when I get an object from the O/R layer I could say "who knows what that thing did, I have to validate all properties" but where does that end [01:18]
sonOfRa Ah yes, the joy of appointments with german bureaucrats [02:50]
sonOfRa Needed a new ID and set my new address [02:51]
sonOfRa Turns out, I still have a "second address" where my parents live (I don't, it's a mistake on their part) [02:51]
sonOfRa I have had that address since September 1st, 1939 (not a typo!) [02:51]
sonOfRa 54 years before I was born [02:51]
scav Well, if you hate it so much, sonOfRa, why don't you go back to where you came from! [02:56]
sonOfRa To the house that I apparently live in since 1939, which was built in 1968, I guess? :D [02:56]
db maybe you can use that somehow [03:01]
db like when applying for vaccination. [03:03]

freeone3000 And I'm back. Pi is now a dedicated IRC server. [06:37]
freeone3000 Nvidia shield is... kind of badass? Like, Android TV is actually a really slick system. And it runs Kodi, so I don't see the point in a dedicated OSMC system anymore. It's also a Chromecast, so I can move my old Chromecast upstairs. And then there's Game Streaming... [06:38]
freeone3000 The remote even has IR for volume! And between that and HDMI-CEC, I have a unified remote and it didn't cost me $200. (Well, it did. But not for just the remote!) [06:39]
[twisti] does anyone understand whats going on with this weird nonsensical spam here today ? [06:39]
acuzio sonOfRa: The process usually goes like this : "talk to the builder, electrician etc. , research what you want , place order based on stock, receive info 3 days later that its now March, April and completely out of scope" ; Start again and this is for every single fucking product. [06:39]
sonOfRa ( [06:39]
acuzio Its just debilitating and really really painful , the worst part of this is I dont understand why what seems to be that no one else can see it [06:40]
acuzio freeone3000: NVidia Sheild is badass ; I am glad that someone else likes it as well cause its not really as popular as it should be [06:42]
acuzio freeone3000: Do you have the Pro or the normal one ? [06:45]
[twisti] im super confused, acuzio. you are debilitated and 'really, really in pain' over half a dozen $7 bulbs ? just buy any random shit off of amazon ? [06:46]
acuzio [twisti]: a) I am not _only_ buying bulbs and its not just half-a-dozen b) This is for every single product i am buying , almost every single product. c) I _dont_ want to buy any random shit off of Amazon. This is my home , i have spent 18 years working towards this . Why am I being deprived off what i want because some fuckers have lied and do not like Brown faces in their supermarkets [06:49]
acuzio This is not just vanity , this is researched stuff that in the longer run is less expensive, more reliable, has better support. As an example , if i look at bulbs , i want "high-CRI, high-lumen" LED bulbs. Why ? Because my eyesight is fucking absolutely terrible. [06:54]
acuzio These specific bulbs have 40,000 hours lifetime , nation wide support, fit into standard GU10 low-profile holders , are extremely high-cri + high-lumen ; I am quite simply unable to find any other bulb that does that , with those specific properties. If there are , I am happy to go and buy them. [06:56]

sonOfRa Neat. Might just get one next month or so when the finances look better [07:24]
sonOfRa Actually maybe a >720p TV first. [07:24]
sonOfRa So many things to buy. Also kinda want a washer+dryer combo, but those are *expensive* espcially if you want a dryer that uses a heat pump. [07:26]
freeone3000 There's actually a lot of cheaper devices with the same featureset. I was literally using a rpi for the same thing, and it worked acceptably as long as my content was all h.264, and would probably be better if it was a pi 4 instead of a pi zero. [07:26]
freeone3000 If you don't need the game streaming, get a random Android TV device. [07:26]
sonOfRa Game streaming is nice occasionally [07:27]
sonOfRa But I'm afraid I'll have to be making sensible grown up purchases for a while before I can indulge in these things again [07:28]
freeone3000 Yeah, I feel that. I've got a new dishwasher and a water heater on my list. [07:32]
sonOfRa Still considering maybe buying washing machine and a heat pump dryer separately, but then it's two devices instead of one, which is inconvenient! [07:34]
freeone3000 one device, in that, they share a drum? [07:35]
freeone3000 that's one of those things that I logically assumed would exist, but, I've never actually seen [07:37]
waz [waz!~waz@pdpc/supporter/active/waz] has joined #java-talk [07:37]
sonOfRa yeah [07:39]
sonOfRa However, it looks like the combination I want washer+dryer, and specifically the dryer being a heat pump is only manufactured by AEG [07:40]
sonOfRa And it has wifi, and costs almost 2000? [07:40]
sonOfRa I do not want my washing machine and dryer to have wifi [07:40]
scav why? don't you want to assist in ddos' and bitcoin mining? [07:54]
scav i mean im sure if there actually was a software issue with your toaster, the manufacturer would promptly release an easy to apply OTA fix for it? [07:55]
sonOfRa D [07:56]
sonOfRa always reminds me of this https://i.imgur.com/VB5Y0VK.png [07:57]
fotato Freeone3000: CEC really did sort of kill the universal remote market tbh. [08:14]
freeone3000 Good! [08:14]
fotato Yeah it?sa mostly good tech [08:14]
puppy_za sonOfRa: I heard that combined (washing machine with dryer) one doesn't work too well. I have them separate. (To be fair, I only use dryer for 3 months in a year. So I could have just get the washing machine) [08:22]
scav haha, sonOfRa 100% :D [08:23]
db Washer+dryers do exist, I have used a coin-operated one in Japan [08:40]
Faux Heh, look at you fancy people living in big houses. My parents own a non-washer-dryer, that's how posh they are. [08:41]
freeone3000 They are just not a thing in NA. Even small houses/condos here use stackable ones instead. [08:42]
mbooth I have separate washer and dryer, but doing so means I sacrificed the dishwasher. I don't mind washing the dishes so this is an acceptible compromise [08:42]
freeone3000 Do Europeans do laundry in the kitchen? [08:43]
mbooth In the UK it's very common yes [08:44]
mbooth Houses are not big enough for a separate room [08:44]
freeone3000 My laundry room is literally a closet. Like. It fits the washer and the dryer and literally nothing else. [08:45]
freeone3000 They're also stacked. But I get that it requires routing a separate water line and a separate exhaust vent, in addition to the kitchen one, so it kind of makes sense to combine them. [08:46]
sonOfRa freeone3000: it really depends on where you have space. If I buy a combo, it'll be in the guest bathroom, simply because that's where the water line is [08:46]
sonOfRa If we end up buying split devices, we'll either stack them, or put the drier in the basement [08:46]
mbooth freeone3000: I've seem a few inter-war houses that have moved the bathroom upstairs and turned the old downstairs bathroom into a laundry/utility space because that's where the plumbing exists [08:46]
freeone3000 (mine shares a wall with the kitchen, so they got to be lazy in that precise way.) [08:46]
freeone3000 sonOfRa: *just* the drier? no wonder you'd find a separate unit inconvenient! [08:47]
sonOfRa They do driers with outlet hoses, and driers with a water container, so you can put the drier up independently of water [08:47]
sonOfRa With stacks I'm always afraid a device may fall off [08:48]
freeone3000 Eight years no incidents! two manufacturers! no issues! the dryer being on top and lighter helps. [08:49]
Faux My sister's house is fancy, her kitchen is big enough that she's managed to hand a curtain across a corner, to keep the poor people appliances in. [08:49]
mbooth I assume you'd put a wall anchor in, in case an uneven loads might otherwise walk it off the cliff edge :-) [08:49]
freeone3000 mbooth: putting in a wall anchor will absolutely just rip holes in your wall and possibly shear the anchor [08:50]
Faux Are dryers significantly lighter than washing machines, due to lower spin rates? I don't really know. [08:50]
Faux Maybe they are higher spin rates. [08:50]
freeone3000 Faux: They're lighter due to not having a giant drum full of water. [08:50]
mbooth Faux: Washing machine has a concrete block in it [08:50]
Faux Yeah, but the concrete block is because of the heavy spinning stuff. [08:50]
mbooth Dryer does not [08:50]
Faux It still does the heavy spinning stuff, so I'd expect it to require counterweightance. [08:51]
mbooth Apparently not [08:51]
mbooth I can lift my dryer. I can only drag my washer [08:51]
Faux Heh. Sold. [08:51]
db A dryer spins slowly [08:52]
db A washer spins >1000rpm [08:52]
mbooth And crucially does not fill with water ;-) [08:52]
scav I love this quote: "Simply put, a data warehouse is a centrally managed, high-performance, scalable data repository for the enterprise that stores and models large quantities of current and historical data from multiple data sources for reporting and analytics. " [08:52]
db During spinning, water is drained [08:53]
freeone3000 And even then, a drum full of wet clothing is still going to be cheaper than *checks notes* *100L* of water [08:53]
scav I mean, thanks for making it simple [08:53]

Faux (From the lake.) [08:54]
freeone3000 Faux: the former's a columnular store, the latter's a oltp set of queries. [08:54]
Faux Oh, you mean, bigquery, and, uh, bigquery? [08:55]
freeone3000 in azure terms, that's Azure Data Lake and... Azure Data Lake. [08:55]
scav mbooth: yeah, i walked right into that one [08:55]

Faux Also known as "data money incinerator" and "data money incinerator with unexpected downtime". [08:55]
freeone3000 I wouldn't know. (We pay for Azure usage in imaginary money.) [08:56]
scav Faux: the amount of bullshit buzzwords in that field is just staggering [08:56]
freeone3000 Well, you can't fit it into SQL Server. Except you can, because Azure Data Lake is *backed by SQL Server* because SQL Server is kind of insane. [08:56]
Faux Maybe we can sell them some CD or some DoI. [08:56]
Faux Yes, I typed Dependency of Injection. Do you think French has rekt my brain? [08:57]

fotato would always recommend separate appliances though. You can pipeline loads. [09:03]
fotato Plus if one breaks at least you have the other. [09:03]

fotato maybe acuzio is just always writing clojure [10:29]
acuzio yes thank you fotato [10:30]
ron managed to kill my mac, had to restart [10:30]
ron but I'm back so you can relax [10:30]
fotato you didnt kill it, you just knocked it out. [10:30]
fotato i'm always relaxed dude. [10:31]
fotato well, FSVO relaxed [10:31]
ron yeah right [10:31]
fotato i mean sure, slowly going blind in one eye and losing multiple family members in the space of a few weeks does raise the relax baseline somewhat. [10:32]
acuzio re: Taxes : The UK Gov has a great website for this except its only understandable to accountants so there are other apps that make it better and guess what , the fucking API for the thing is a nightmare . the worse part is you submit taxes , the app says "Yo taxes submitted, here is proof from HMRC" , HMRC goes "Sorry, taxes , what taxes , please to pay" . I am like "fuck this2 [10:32]
ron re taxes? are you bitching about taxes again? [10:33]
fotato acuzio i used gosimpletax to file my UK taxes. it was pretty straightforward [10:33]
acuzio why are you going blind fotato ; (other than the usual reason) [10:33]
ron man, you're just like the rest of those republicans [10:33]
fotato the usual reason being? [10:33]
acuzio ron: STFU [10:33]
ron why because you're a republican? [10:33]
acuzio fotato: too much masturbation - have you not read your fucking scriptures [10:33]
fotato acuzio: i have CRVO in my right eye which caused a macular edema which i got treatment for. [10:33]
fotato but it's a bandaid untnil we can identify potential root causes. [10:34]
ron have you tried not being a republican? [10:34]
mbooth An immaculate enema? [10:34]
fotato macular. [10:34]

acuzio that suckx dude [10:35]
fotato they bandaid it by injecting a drug originally used for chemo directly into the eyeball [10:35]
fotato ironically two of the potential side effects are 'vision loss, retinal detachment' [10:35]
acuzio facepalms [10:35]

acuzio fotato: Actually gosimpletax is also another one i have used in the past ., its also got the same issue , immediate feedback but is not reflected on the HMRC site. [10:42]
acuzio yes thank you ron [10:42]
acuzio In other news , Teenage girls are terrifying [10:43]
ron you're terrifying too [10:43]
ron ergo [10:43]
ron acuzio is a teenage giirl [10:43]
ron giiiiiiiiiiirl [10:43]
sonOfRa guuuuuuurl [10:43]
mbooth Carolation is not causation. [10:45]
acuzio yeah exactly ; Friend related an incident about his daughter and her friend going to meet another friend and bitching about her all the way and then turning on a dime when they saw her ; he says and i quote "mate, i couldnt believe how smooth they were" ; [10:45]
acuzio (he was driving) [10:46]
acuzio I once found myself in a bus with teenage girls at the back talking about stuff and i have to say it freaked me out ; i quietly moved up front [10:47]
ron mbooth: what about Karenation? [10:47]

scav nice, will you be painting more at the new place? [10:59]
fotato acuzio: you're rich you should be paying an accountant anyway [11:08]
freeone3000 I paid an accountant once. Cost me $5000 for them to basically ask me for a bunch of information and all they did was fill out some forms for me. No thanks. [11:08]
fotato mine only cost like ú500? [11:09]
fotato and it gives you legal protection from doing it wrong. [11:09]
ron did you mean lol protection? [11:10]
freeone3000 I mean, so does mine, but the legal protection is... unncessary? Like, I got audited, and all that happened was a guy from the IRS called me and asked me some questions and told me I filled out a form wrong and told me to fill it out better next time. [11:10]
freeone3000 He was actually nicer to me than my actual accountant was. [11:11]
freeone3000 Oh, and I had to pay back the $3000 from the year I earned income but forgot to file taxes. [11:11]
fotato yeah i man [11:12]
fotato mean [11:12]
fotato my situation is probably a little more complicated? [11:12]
ron flex [11:12]
fotato not at all, freeone3000 is probably richer than me. [11:12]
freeone3000 It's possible. But I'm a homeowner with dual tax residency and income streams in both countries. [11:13]
freeone3000 If you've got a business, yours is worse for sure. [11:13]
mbooth What are the tax implications of being a homeowner? [11:13]
freeone3000 mbooth: ZOUNDS. [11:13]
mbooth I mean, I'm a homeowner, but it has no bearing on my income tax. [11:14]
freeone3000 then you don't pay tax in the US or Canada, there's like a hundred line items modified by this. [11:14]
mbooth o_O [11:15]
freeone3000 for instance, my mortgage interest is tax-deductible but only the interest on the first $250,000 of the loan. [11:15]
mbooth Is it because your home is your place of business? [11:16]
freeone3000 no. that's treated separate. [11:16]
mbooth boggles [11:17]
freeone3000 it's to encourage home ownership, but it's also means-tested, because it was introduced by democrats. [11:17]
freeone3000 you should see the marriage incentives! they're even more insane! [11:17]
ron umm [11:18]
ron I think google just suggested I get a beehive hairdo [11:18]
mbooth ron: More like a hairdon't, amiright? [11:18]
ron asked google what's my schedule, it said I have a haircut and that beehives are back in style ? [11:19]

acuzio and freeone3000 is also right with dual homeowner and dual citizenship and dual income streams ; its fucking mad and accountants dont really help ; You have to understand this shit [12:49]
