Hey guys. I'm running into issues when I try to create an input stream class that inherits InputStream and delegates all methods to a delegator object (manually created, not the kotlin delegation thingy since InputStream is a class and not an interface). I'm getting a compilation error "'skipNBytes' overrides nothing" when I compile with Gradle but IDEA doesn't complain. Here's the full code as well as the output from |

Is Kotlin good to use with libGDX? |

as good as any jvm language i'd imagine. |

I have two libs, one is Java generated from protos, the other is hand-written Java. Both have some Builder setFoo(Foo foo) method, but I can only seem to use builder.foo = foo for the proto version, not the hand-written Java version. |
[06:27]
|
ricky_clarkson |
Anything you'd suggest to look for in terms of differences, or likely reasons? |

Has anyone ever successfully used Kotlin in Eclipse? I sure haven't. |
[06:38]
|
pillager86 |
What good is a language if it is tied to a single IDE? |
[06:42]
|
cheeser |
i don't use eclipse so i dunno |
[07:07]
|
cheeser |
but to answer your question: xcode and objective-c seem to work just fine. |
[07:07]
|
dreamreal |
if xcode works, eclipse will work |

The JetBrains Kotlin plugin for Eclipse broke the text editor component of the IDE so I give up. |
[07:14]
|
pillager86 |
Every time I try that plugin I get a different error message so maybe Kotlin is not for me sorry. |
[07:14]
|
dreamreal nods. |
[07:14]
|
cheeser |
or perhaps eclipse is not for you? |
[07:15]
|
pillager86 |
cheeser, I have to use Eclipse for Swing applications because if I use intellij, it uses .form files and there's no way to package that into a jar that "just runs" |
[07:21]
|
dreamreal |
no, you don't have to use .form files, those are part of IntelliJ's designer and are not required |
[07:22]
|
cheeser |
um. that's not at all true. you can do swing dev in IDEA just fine. |
[07:22]
|
pillager86 |
well I'm not manually coding form layouts either. In Eclipse I use a plugin that generates editable code. |
[07:22]
|
dreamreal shrugs |
[07:23]
|
dreamreal |
Well, the kotlin plugin for eclipse-jee does in fact fail to open an editable window, with jdk11 and jdk15 |
[07:24]
|
dreamreal shrugs |
[07:24]
|
cheeser |
jetbrains kinda bailed on that, as i understand it, because it was a resource sink. |
[07:24]
|
dreamreal |
I can't imagine |

It seems annoying in Kotlin to use a companion object to house a constant, so I ended up moving it to a val in my class.. then by chance I used the constant in a method called in an initializer and got a null due to initialization order.. |
[09:39]
|
ricky_clarkson |
That's something I imagined Kotlin would somehow prevent or discourage as a null-safe language. In general do you think it's better to use companion objects for constants, or normal val properties but with more care about initialization order? |
[09:40]
|
cheeser |
i use companion objects |
[10:37]
|
cheeser |
you'd have the same problem using non-static fields in java. |
