geertjanw hello [06:22]
geertjanw if anyone has any problems with NetBeans, feel free to contact me, the product manager of NetBeans, directly: geertjan.wielenga@oracle.com [06:24]
darkbasic [niko.linuxsystems.it] has joined #netbeans [06:27]
geertjanw hello [06:36]
Candle geertjanw: Good to see you here! darkbasic's connection hasn't been particularly stable over the last few hours! [06:37]
Candle so they'll be joining and leaving until they notice/fix it. [06:38]
geertjanw I see. [06:38]
geertjanw Who and where are you, Candle? :-) [06:38]
Candle "Just" a user, and a lurker here who tried to answer prople's questions. [06:39]
geertjanw OK, I see. Not a NetBeans user then? [06:39]
Candle geertjanw: Git plugin, r-click on a file, -> show history. Summary view, where does it get the localisation format for the dates? 4/3/15, for example is ambigous. [06:40]
Candle No, a NB user. [06:40]
geertjanw Great. I am product manager of NetBeans, I blog at blogs.oracle.com/geertjan [06:40]
Candle knows :) [06:41]
geertjanw :-) OK great. [06:41]
pdurbin geertjanw: I'm glad to see you here. Thanks for everything you do for Netbeans. [06:42]
geertjanw hey, thanks, pdurbin, good to see you too [06:42]
geertjanw I believe that date info is set by the os, Candle. Looking at it now myself in NetBeans. [06:43]
geertjanw Just completed this book, which I can highly recommend: http://www.apress.com/9781484212585 [06:44]
javabot geertjanw's title: Beginning NetBeans IDE - For Java Developers [06:44]
Candle geertjanw: OSX; language & formats -> formats -> region is set to UK, the presented format is US. (latest change is 9/23/15) [06:46]
geertjanw Maybe it's something from Git specifically. [06:47]
geertjanw Just to make sure before I ask someone about this, is this the date that you mean: https://blogs.oracle.com/geertjan/resource/git-date.png [06:51]
Candle geertjanw: That's the one. [06:53]
bbankes_ [c-73-3-71-89.hsd1.ut.comcast.net] has joined #netbeans [06:58]
geertjanw OK. [06:59]
geertjanw Could you drop me a mail at geertjan.wielenga@oracle.com and then I'll pass it on to the engineer who works in this area. [07:00]
geertjanw hello all [07:02]
geertjanw happy to answer (or try to answer!) questions about NetBeans and to also hear from anyone about feelings/thoughts/whatevers about NetBeans (I am the NetBeans product manager, working here in Amsterdam) [07:02]
pdurbin geertjanw: do you know why the "Standard Javac Warnings" are disabled by default? See the bottom of https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KTd3FpM1BI3HlBofaZjMmBiQEJtFf11jiiGpQeJzy7A/edit?usp=sharing which we link from http://guides.dataverse.org/en/latest/developers/coding-style.html [07:34]

pdurbin see also the discussion starting at http://irclog.iq.harvard.edu/dataverse/2015-09-25#i_24707 about the power of defaults [07:40]
javabot pdurbin's title: IRC log for #dataverse, 2015-09-25 [07:40]
geertjanw Interesting. [07:43]
pdurbin geertjanw: basically, we have a contributor who is really into type safety (which is great!) but he's somewhat out of step from the main developers who use the default Netbeans settings [07:45]
geertjanw It's probably good that one needs to explcitly enable those kinds of warnings, might be too much info for some. [07:45]
geertjanw You could export your settings and let that contributor import them. [07:46]
geertjanw Then you'll all be on the same page, i.e., have the same settings, etc. [07:46]
pdurbin geertjanw: can you import settings on a per-project basis? or does it affect global settings for all projects in Netbeans? [07:46]
geertjanw Yes, it's global. [07:47]
geertjanw I think its unavoidable to have some kind of document with shared settings listed there. [07:47]
geertjanw As you have done. [07:47]
pdurbin really? isn't everything possible with software? given enough time :) [07:48]
bencomp [192.87.139.123] has joined #netbeans [07:48]
pdurbin ideally, I would be able to add a file to our source tree that contains the project's preferred netbeans settings [07:48]
geertjanw :-) [07:49]
geertjanw Well, what you could do is set everything up as you like it to be, then take the user directory and pass that on to your contributor in a ZIP file. [07:50]
pdurbin geertjanw: our contributor is here! please meet bencomp who is also in the Netherlands and helps run https://dataverse.nl [07:53]
javabot pdurbin's title: DataverseNL Dataverse Network [07:53]
geertjanw :-) Hoi. [07:53]
pdurbin bencomp: I don't care if you talk to geertjanw in Dutch as long as you summarize it all for me later :) ... I need to bike to work anyway! [07:54]
geertjanw :-) [07:54]
geertjanw Thanks for the introduction. [07:54]
geertjanw bencomp, maybe we can meet somewhere sometime [07:54]
Candle geertjanw: Mind if I use the image you linked earlier as a reference example? [08:03]
geertjanw sure [08:03]
darkbasic [niko.linuxsystems.it] has joined #netbeans [08:07]
likecolacola how do i do a add(1) and add(2) through netbeans (git)? [08:25]
likecolacola i found the add button, but there's only one [08:25]
likecolacola with no options [08:25]
geertjanw not sure what that means, what's "add(1) and add(2)" [08:38]
jojovem [187.20.140.81] has joined #netbeans [08:39]

pdurbin geertjanw: so what do you think about per-project settings (i.e. javac warnings enabled)? Should I create a bugzilla issue about this? [08:47]
geertjanw Well, more generally, would be nice if the inspections (whether javac warnings or whatever else) could be exported/imported in the same way as settings in the Options window. [08:48]
pdurbin geertjanw: I'm fine with whatever incremental progress toward what I want makes sense. :) [08:50]
geertjanw well, that would be the more general solution that would include yours [08:51]
shahzadi is there a reference guide section on using netbeans + git [08:51]
pdurbin geertjanw: but does it have to be a one-time import? I'd rather be able to keep the per-project settings in my git repo and have other developers automatically get the new per-project settings when they pull the latest code. [08:52]
geertjanw sure [08:52]
pdurbin shahzadi: https://netbeans.org/kb/docs/ide/git.html [08:53]
javabot pdurbin's title: Using Git Support in NetBeans IDE [08:53]
geertjanw make that issue and send a link to me in an e-mail [08:53]
pdurbin geertjanw: ok! thanks! [08:53]
shahzadi thank you [08:53]
geertjanw cool [08:53]
shahzadi spending way more time organizing coding environment than coding [08:53]
geertjanw there's also a whole chapter about NetBeans and Git here: http://www.apress.com/9781484212585 [08:53]
javabot geertjanw's title: Beginning NetBeans IDE - For Java Developers [08:53]
shahzadi which is ... painful ... because this stuff is supposed to help me save time [08:53]
geertjanw well, you can stop using your coding environment and use the command line instead, to see the difference :-) [08:54]
shahzadi it's hard going back and forth between browser, terminal, IDE, IRC client ... virtual machines ... [08:54]
shahzadi old way was a book on my desk and a text editor [08:55]
shahzadi now im confused :( [08:55]
geertjanw the browser is in NetBeans and the terminal is too [08:55]
shahzadi i'm not sure if i should run netbeans in windows or linux [08:55]
geertjanw OK, use your book and your text editor, if that works for you, great [08:56]
geertjanw use it wherever it works best for you [08:56]
shahzadi it's very sad that i'm leaning to linux because the git-gui browser is much better in windows [08:56]
shahzadi err, leaning to windows [08:56]
shahzadi i have a feeling i am going to spend less time trying to make things work in windows [08:56]
geertjanw ok, great [08:57]
shahzadi waity [08:58]
shahzadi i could use solaris [08:58]
shahzadi !!!!!!!! [08:58]
shahzadi please tell me that's so [08:58]
geertjanw sure, you could use solaris [08:59]
shahzadi funny ... all i know so far, after trying a bunch of different "ways" to code [09:02]
shahzadi is that i will continue to use netbeans [09:02]
geertjanw Nice. :-) [09:03]
